The European Foundation Centre (EFC) has launched a new publication to help events planners ensure their events are accessible to all.

How Do They Do It? EFC Members Share Good Practice on Organising Accessible Events features eight case studies by European foundations, sharing their insights and the lessons learned from their experiences of organising accessible events that are inclusive for persons with disabilities, both pre-pandemic and through it.

Also included is a checklist for events planners to use when organising accessible events. This compiles the key elements in creating an accessible event, both offline and online, covering everything from initial planning, through to communications around the event, venues, and sessions and also features a set of recommendations on how to make the process easier and more efficient.

In his foreword, Michael Fembek, Chair of the EFC Disability Thematic Network and Director of the Zero Project, ESSL Foundation welcomes the publication but reiterates that:

“If there is one main take away on event accessibility, it is this: It is a journey, not a goal. But you never get anywhere if you do not embark on the journey.”

The report is itself designed to be fully accessible, and is available to download from the EFC website.

The Institute of Fundraising has updated its guidance aimed at helping charities better support donors who may be vulnerable.

The Treating Donors Fairly guidance aims to help fundraisers in recognising and responding appropriately to people in vulnerable circumstances. It provides practical assistance in recognising people in vulnerable circumstances and recommends appropriate ways to respond.

The guidance covers mental capacity and vulnerability, and how fundraisers can respond, data protection and the recording of personal data, and a step-by-step guide to developing a fundraising policy. Each section contains information on identifying vulnerable circumstances in a way that fundraisers can relate to, and gives checklists, examples, and practical tips aimed at helping both the fundraiser and senior charity staff responsible for fundraising strategy.

IoF chief executive Peter Lewis, said:

“Fundraisers do an amazing job, especially during the festive season, raising millions of pounds for good causes. They inevitably come into contact with people in vulnerable circumstances and need support to be able to recognise these situations, and know how to respond appropriately when they arise. This updated practical guide offers precisely this support.”
