A special edition of the International Journal of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Marketing will be released in 2021 exploring the professional ethics of fundraising. The special issue’s editor, Ian MacQuillin, founder of Rogare – The Fundraising ThinkTank, is urging academics and pracademics (academic-practitioners) to submit proposals to contribute to the edition.
MacQuillin says:
“For such a major component of the discipline of nonprofit marketing, fundraising doesn’t have a lot in the way of professional ethics underpinning it.
“This is not to suggest for a moment that fundraising is in any way unethical; just that there are few theories of professional ethics on which to found ethical best practice. And that is something that – with this new initiative – we’re working hard to put right.
“This is a great opportunity for academics or practitioners with an academic background to explore the topic and contribute to best practice in the field.”
Potential topics include examining who are fundraising’s main ethical stakeholders, what rights do they have and what duties do fundraisers owe them? And from where do those duties derive? What types of ethical decision-making tools or heuristics do fundraisers employ? And how similar/different is fundraising ethics to marketing ethics and what can fundraisers learn from marketing ethics?
The call for submission brief asks interested parties are asked to submit abstracts summarising what their paper will cover by the deadline of 01 January 2021. The full papers will need to be submitted at the start of April.
