Social fundraising platform GoFundMe has appointed a head of communications in the UK to spearhead its expansion into Europe.

John Coventry is the company’s first hire outside of the US, where the platform is based, and GoFundMe has said that it expects to make further appointments across Europe this year.

Coventry joins from Change.org where he helped launch the UK operation before leading the European and global communications teams. He will report to GoFundMe VP of Policy and Communications, Dan Pfeiffer, former Senior Advisor to Barack Obama, and will be joined in the UK initially by GoFundMe Media Director Kelsea Little.

Coventry said:

“The power of the internet to give everyone the tools to stand up for the issues they care about is one of the defining stories of our times. GoFundMe is changing the way people raise and give money. It’s great to be joining at such an exciting stage of growth.”

GoFundMe launched in 2010 and has so far raised more than £2.5 billion.
